Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper Season 3 DVD Review

Cooper

The third season of “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper” hits DVD.

In the 22 episode third season, viewers step into the world of Mark Cooper (an NBA player turned Oakbridge High School teacher), his roomie Vanessa, Mark’s Cousin Geneva and her daughter Nicole, and the kid neighbor Tyler. Plot wise, expect to see stories about Mark ignoring an important call from Principal P.J., a bully, a competition between Mark and a friend, Vanessa landing a new job, a Mrs. Doubtfire tape, Mark dating, a movie outing, a vending machine, P.J. staying with Mark, Mark having back pain, Vanessa going out on dates, clothing, Christmas, Mark becoming the basketball coach, lies, the girl’s basketball team, the lottery, Mark’s heroism, Earvin, Mark’s birthday,  and potentially game changing events in the season finale.

I’m not entirely sure why this third season set is being released now of all times, but “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper” fans can now continue their season collections (although it remains to be seen if or when seasons 4 and 5 come out). For those that aren’t familiar with the Oakland set comedy, it’s a VERY 90’s sitcom. It’s all very formulaic stuff complete with laugh tracks, cornball jokes you can see coming a mile away, a few life lessons, and plenty of character banter. Like any series, it will no doubt have nostalgic value to those that grew up with it.

On the plus side, the cast is quite good. Mark Curry does a commendable job leading the show, Omar Gooding (Earvin) and the ever popular Raven-Symoné (Nicole) steal plenty of scenes, and Holly Robinson Peete livens up the show as Vanessa.

In terms of the episodes, there are two stand-outs here. The first is “Instant Replay” which features former NBA star Reggie Miller in a pivotal role. The second is the season finale “High Hopes” which contains big cliffhangers for season 4.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.33:1. How does it look? The standard definition picture quality looks like it did when it aired so don’t expect much quality wise.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital Stereo. How does it sound? It does the job.

No extras.
