Battle Of Jangsari Blu-ray Review

“Battle Of Jangsari” is an uneven war film.

Based on a true story, the 1950 Korean War set “Battle Of Jangsari” tells the story of the Captain Lee commanded Meyong Unit which was comprised of a group of inexperienced South Korean student soldiers. Their mission? To launch a diversionary assault on Jangsari Beach amidst the Battle of Incheon. The other key plotline here involves a U.S. correspondent named Maggie who is aiming to tell the truth about the war.

Directed by Kwak Kyung-Taek, “Battle Of Jangsari” is an international war film that struggles to find its footing. In terms of the actual war scenes, the movie works. Even though they so clearly mimic “Saving Private Ryan” at times, the battle scenes prove to be effective and well made especially given the limited budget. Really, they keep the movie afloat.

Where ‘Battle’ falls flat, however, is with the script by Lee Man-Hee. There’s a great movie to be made about this true life story of sacrifice, but this isn’t it. Not only is it riddled with war movie cliches, but the melodramatic character drama simply doesn’t fit in with the story being told here. Still, the attempt to develop the soldier characters is at least appreciated.

Another major problem is the character of Maggie played by a woefully miscast Megan Fox. The character feels like a tacked on character to provide exposition and include the American POV. Fox’s casting also feels like a mere ploy to include a big name Hollywood actor to garner attention. Fox has done fine work in the past (especially in the TMNT films), but she looks out of her element here.
