Gremlins 4K UHD Review

“Gremlins” comes to 4K just in time for the holidays.

For Christmas a young man named Billy gets a sweet but odd pet known as a Mogwai (which affectionately becomes named Gizmo). Despite knowing that 3 rules need to be followed (no light, no water, and don’t feed after midnight) when owning a Mogwai, the rules are, of course, all broken over the course of the movie. As a result, all hell breaks loose in Small Town USA (AKA Kingston Falls).

Written by Christopher Columbus, directed by Joe Dante, and produced by Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, the now 35 year old “Gremlins” is very much an ode to B-Movies and the antithesis of holiday fare such as “It’s A Wonderful life.” It’s a kitchen sink movie in that it’s a creature feature, a warped Christmas movie, a horror movie, a horror-comedy, a unique take on the boy and his dog tale, and a romance movie to an extent with the Billy and Kate relationship.

“Gremlins” is almost too ambitious though as the characters and cast (which is comprised of some well known names like Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Corey Feldman, Judge Reinhold, and Dick Miller) tend to get lost amidst the impressive special effects and puppets which clearly took on a life of their own in the world of pop culture. Still, between Jerry Golsmith’s underrated score and the crazy Gremlin antics, it’s hard not to get wrapped up in this demented and often cartoony monster movie that Joe Dante was clearly born to direct.

Presentation: 1.85:1 2160p. How does it look? Compared to the Blu-ray, the 4K disc is noticeably better. The image is clearer and the colors look sharper.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The 5.1 track shines from start to finish.
