Universal Soldier 4K UHD Review

Universal.jpg

“Universal Soldier” is pure 90s action cheese.

Back in 1992, two action icons starred in a sci-fi action movie together. The stars? Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. The movie? The Roland Emmerich directed “Universal Soldier.” The film starts during the Vietnam War where we are introduced to soldiers Luc and the psycho ear collecting Sgt. Andrew Scott who wind up killing one another. 25 years later the 2 soldiers are resurrected as cybernetic soldiers via a secret program. Unsurprisingly, the soldiers malfunction and begin to remember their past selves. Luc goes rogue trying to save a reporter while Scott goes crazy again and hunts Luc down.

Before action movie stars were relegated to making terrible direct to home video titles, the stars were making good sized budget theatrical R-rated films that were actually entertaining. “Universal Soldier” is one such film. Despite being a Terminator rip-off that is essentially a plotless chase movie, “Universal Soldier” achieves what it sets out to do. Do you want to see Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Van Damme face off against one another? You get that here. Do you want to see explosions, vehicles, shootouts, action set pieces, a high body count, and a wave of destruction? This movie delivers that in spades. Do you want to see mountains of ice bags and seat belt and cigarette PSAs? Ok, maybe you don’t want those, but this movie has that too!

On the subject of Van Damme and Lundgren, they’re actually pretty solid here. Lundgren seems to be relishing his role as a crazed villain here while Van Damme shows some range here with some dramatic and comedic moments. At the end of the day though, you want to see these two in intense action scenes and you certainly get that. Their climactic fight does not disappoint.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.40:1 2160p. How does it look? For a catalog title this is a deeply impressive transfer .

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? A satisfactory 5.1 track.

Extras:
* Blu-ray copy
* Digital copy
* “Universal Soldier” trailer
* Alternate ending
* “A Tale Of Two Titans”- A featurette about Van Damme and Lundgren.
* “Guns, Genes and Fighting Machines”- A 19 minute making of featurette.
* A 15 ½ minute collection of behind the scenes footage
* 2 commentary tracks. One by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin and the other by Emmerich, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren and Dean Devlin. Neither track is particularly exciting, but there are some nice factoids.
