Crawl Blu-ray Review

Crawl.jpg

“Crawl” is exactly what it’s advertised as.

As a Category 5 Hurricane sweeps through Florida and evacuations have commenced, Haley tries to find her father (Dave). At her first stop, she finds the family dog. At her second stop, she finds her father injured under the crawl space of their old family home. As if things weren’t bad enough, the area is flooding and ferocious alligators are lurking about. Can the two avoid the gators and be rescued or are they doomed?

If you go into “Crawl” expecting a killer alligator movie, you certainly get that alongside what is essentially a disaster movie with the hurricane element. Basically, this is a pretty straight forward horror movie in which problems continue to mount for the lead characters. It delivers what it sets out to do and it does it well. Under the guidance of skilled director Alexandre Aja (best known for horror films like “High Tension” and “The Hills Have Eyes” remake) and producer Sam Raimi, “Crawl” is a claustrophobic, fast paced, brutal, and intense horror film. Sure, you have to wade through (pun intended) some family bonding drama, plot conveniences (Haley is a swimmer!), inconsistent VFX, and questionable character actions, but those are minor quibbles. Chances are high that you’ll likely find yourself swept up by this thrill ride of a movie.

Cast wise, this is essentially a two person movie. Kaya Scodelario (Haley) is a strong female lead and she handles this very physical role exceedingly well. Barry Pepper (Dave) has always been an underrated actor and it’s nice to see him in a major role again.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.39:1 1080p. How does it look? Expect a strong hi-def transfer.

Audio Track: 7.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? Whether you’re hearing the sounds of a hurricane or the chomps of gators, this is an effective 7.1 track.
