The Carol Burnett Show: 50th Anniversary Special DVD Review

“The Carol Burnett Show: 50th Anniversary Special” is strictly for the fans.

Originally airing back in December, 2017, “The Carol Burnett Show: 50th Anniversary Special” is essentially a 95 minute tribute/puff piece to the groundbreaking and influential CBS TV series as well as Carol Burnett herself. The special contains clips and highlights from the show involving everything from Harvey Korman to the movie parodies, but the big draw here is the appearances. Not only do celebs like Steven Colbert, Jim Carrey, Bill Hader, Jay Leno, Martin Short, and Amy Poehler show up to ask questions, talk about what the series meant to them and or discuss favorite moments, but original cast/crew members such as Carol Burnett, Vicki Lawrence, Lyle Waggoner, and Bob Mackie also make appearances as well. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s also recorded messages from celeb fans like Ellen and Jimmy Kimmel along with a tribute to musical moments as well as musical performances by Harry Connick Jr., Bernadette Peters among others.

This 50th anniversary special is essentially one big trip down memory lane. For those that grew up on the show or are big fans of Carol Burnett, this should charm you. Granted, the whole thing feels a bit forced at times as it often feels like the star studded guests are saying “Remember when…,” but that goes with the territory for these kind of events. Really, the special is at its best when we are just seeing “best of” clips from the series or when Burnett is just being herself on stage ala addressing the audience as she once did on her own show.

Presentation: How does it look? The show clips vary in quality but the Special itself looks solid in standard definition.

Audio Tracks: Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 tracks. How do they sound? Obviously, the 5.1 track has more depth and is the track to go with.

* “Red Carpet Love”- Celebs share their thoughts about Carol Burnett on the red carpet.
* “Commercial Break Banter”- Behind-the-scenes footage with Carol and others answering questions from the audience.
* “Anniversary Messages To Carol”- Ellen, Lily Tomlin, Jimmy Fallon and others record messages about how much Carol Burnett and her show mean to them.
