City Slickers: Collector’s Edition Blu-ray Review

“City Slickers” is a 90’s classic.

In “City Slickers,” a middle aged NY family man (Mitch) is in the midst of having a mid-life crisis. When he gets a birthday present for a trip to New Mexico to embark on a cattle drive, he decides to go with his best friends Phil and Ed to live out a western adventure together and perhaps find himself along the way. Upon arriving in NM, Mitch, Phil, and Ed and other tourists go through a perilous but life-changing journey alongside a trail boss named Curly and a cow named Norman.

Comedy is hard. Making a comedy film that fires on all cylinders is even harder. For every comedy gem that comes along, there are so many more that fall flat or fail to remain consistent from start to finish. “City Slickers” is the type of comedy film that works all the way through. The jokes are smart, the characters are well rounded, there’s a poignant central story about friendship and figuring out your life (and perhaps revitalizing it), and the multi-genre script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel offers up everything from western action to character drama. Heck, I even like the often mocked sequel “City Slickers 2: The Legend of Curly’s Gold”!

As good as the material is, it’s the first rate cast that really elevates it all. Obviously, Jack Palance is the MVP here as the tough but wise trail boss Curly. The actor even earned a much deserved Academy Award for his work. Billy Crystal is also at his best here and it is arguably his finest film to date. He brings a lot of humility to his city dad character that is feeling a bit lost in life. Crystal’s co-stars Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby are also fantastic here. There’s such a fun chemistry between the three.

Presentation: 1.85:1 1080p. How does it look? This new Shout Select Collector’s Edition release contains a new 4K transfer of the film and I’m happy to report it’s impressive. This is easily the best the film has looked on home video thus far.

Audio Track: 5.1 and 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? From the bull run to the sweeping Marc Shaiman score, this is a lively track.

Extras: * “City Slickers” trailer * Nearly 3 minutes of deleted scenes * “Back In The Saddle: City Slickers Revisited”- A 29 minute featurette containing cast and crew interviews, discussions about the film’s popularity, stories from the production, film clips and more. * “Bringing In The Script: Writing City Slickers”- A 21 minute extra about the screenwriting process for this film. * “A Star Is Born: An Ode To Norman”- The beloved cow gets the spotlight here. * “The Real City Slickers”- A look at a real ranch from the operators to the guests. * An informative and joke filled commentary by Ron Underwood, Daniel Stern and Billy Crystal.
