Star Wars Adventures: Tales From Vader’s Castle Issue 3 Comic Book Review
The third issue on par with the first two. Make of that as you will.
After 2 underwhelming issues, the 5 issue “Star Wars Adventures: Tales From Vader’s Castle” continues with issue 3. Once again, writer Cavan Scott takes on the writing duties for both the wrap-around and the feature story (this one is titled “Beware The Briar Witch!”). In the wrap-around tale, Lina Graf and her crew of Rebels are under attack by stormtroopers and are forced to flee to the fortress. It is there that Lina tells a story about a woman who needed a pilot to deliver a statue to a collector on the planet Rendel (which is allegedly cursed). The pilot that accepts the job? None other than Alden Ehrenreich era Han Solo and his co-pilot Chewbacca. Upon arriving on the thorny planet of Rendel, Han and Chewie discover that something is quite off about this planet.
The third issue is more of the same here in that these stories are (so far) unfulfilling fluff. Now, perhaps the final 2 issues involving Ewoks and Darth Vader will fare better, but that remains to be seen. This third issue simply lacks anything of substance. The wrap-around story is moving at a slow, slow pace and the ‘Briar’ tale is more fantasy than horror as it feels like a tribute to “The Wizard of Oz.” Much like issue 2, I’m not quite sure that it feels enough like a “Star Wars” story, but at least there’s some fun Han and Chewie back and forths.
The art continues to be the best thing about this mini-series. Wrap-around artist Derek Charm is still crushing it with his stylized art. Corin Howell’s ‘Briar’ art also impresses here with its atmospheric visuals that also have an almost animated series esque vibe which works wonders.
Note: The comic concludes with a cover art gallery and IDW comic ads as per usual.
