The Big Bang Theory Season 11 Blu-ray Review

The penultimate season of “The Big Bang Theory” hits home video.

“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own.”

In the 24 episode eleventh season, the two main storylines involve Amy and Sheldon’s wedding and a new pregnancy (won’t say who is pregnant to avoid spoiling things). On top of that, fans of the long-running sitcom will also be treated to stories involving wedding planning (obviously), a TV show reboot, Raj’s relationships, Bitcoin, Howard and Raj feuding, various science/physics projects (including one about string theory), Bill Gates, Neil Gaiman, and Sheldon’s family. Of course, there are the usual cameos and guest spots including such celebs as Mark Hamill and Wil Wheaton.

Despite the fact that “The Big Bang Theory” feels like it has been slowly running out of steam for a few years, I have appreciated the show’s later seasons’ focus on characters, relationships, and families. Early on in the show’s run, it was largely comprised of unfunny geek life clichés that sometimes felt condescending and out of touch with reality. Now, the show’s characters and writers have etched out a more mature sitcom that explores character dynamics, life adjustments, responsibilities, and complications within the character dynamics. With all of that said though, it’s clear the writers are running out of stories to tell as there’s only so much you can do with these characters. Luckily, there are a couple big events in this season including the all-star season finale which is easily the highlight of the entire season. Granted, the lead up to this wedding and the birth seem drawn out to say the least, but the events themselves are rewarding (especially for the devoted fans).

Cast wise, I do get the sense that the actors are slightly going through the motions now. The enthusiasm and exuberance has waned, the running jokes have lost their mojo, they have all aged more, and it does feel like the cast has done all they can with the characters by this point. It’s wise that the show is ending in season twelve then as it’s better to go out on top than continue on and on.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? Expect to see crisp hi-def transfers for the episodes.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? A clear sounding sitcom all around.

Extras: * Digital copy * The standard San Diego Comic-Con Panel (this one is from 2017). * A 7 minute gag reel * “The Big Bang Theory: The Blueprint Of Comedy”- An extra about the writing process and comedy. * “A BBT History of Time”- A tribute to the late brilliant Stephen Hawking. * “The Maturation Imperative”- A look at the season’s highlights including the big wedding.
