Between Land And Sea DVD Review

“Between Land And Sea” is more than a surfing documentary.

When it comes to surfing locations, most people likely think of places like California or Australia. I would imagine Ireland is not one of those locations that comes to mind, but as the documentary film “Between Land And Sea” shows, there is indeed a surfing community there (in Lahinch in County Clare to be exact).

While surfing is obviously a big part of this documentary, it’s not the sole focus. Much of the film is dedicated to life in this small country town through a calendar year as it follows families, surfing businesses, local surfers (like Ollie), a surfer turned family man who is attempting to live off the land (Fergal), a miner/family man/surfer (Tom), a kind hearted swimmer (Pat) among others. Pro surfer Shane Dorian even makes an appearance at one point to ride the waves.

Director Ross Whitaker has taken a niche topic about an obscure Irish town’s surfing economy and has managed to make something quite involving. Had this merely been a surfing centric documentary, I might have found myself zoning out. That’s not a knock on the picturesque surfing footage that is present here. I’m merely saying you can only do so much with it. Thankfully, Whitaker instead focuses on the entire town and how important surfing is to the local townspeople and the community at large. At times, it honestly feels like there could be a TV drama built around this town because there’s so much going on there throughout all of the year’s seasons. Whitaker really paints a picture of this town and the people within it and has made a fine documentary in the process.

Presentation: 1.78:1. How does it look? It looks picturesque even in in standard definition.

Audio Track: 2.0 Stereo. How does it sound? It does the job.

The only extras are trailers for other Film Movement titles.
