Rowan And Martin’s Laugh-In Season 6 DVD Review

This is the end.

In the 24 episode sixth and final season of “Rowan And Martin’s Laugh-In” viewers can expect more of the same. Guest stars? You bet. Some of the big ones include John Wayne, Janet Leigh, Lucie Arnaz, James Caan, Jack Benny, Carol Burnett, Sammy Davis Jr., Ernest Borgnine, Dom DeLuise, Michael Landon, Phyllis Diller, Rip Taylor, Johnny Carson and more. Reoccurring bits? For sure. Examples include the cocktail party, the joke wall, the Swizzles, sports news, Mod, Mod World and so on. Of course, there’s the usual musical numbers, TV and movie spoofs and much more as well. Now, granted, there are some new elements including a new batch of Downtown Beauties (cheerleaders essentially), new sets, and new cast members including ventriloquist act Willie Tyler and Lester.

If you’ve been following my reviews of several seasons of this series, you will know that while I respect its legacy and influence on comedy and variety shows, it is a dated time capsule. Comedy has evolved past this and the sketches, one-liners, and series like this just feel out of time. Granted, there are a lot of comedy shows and films that have a dated quality, but something like old “Saturday Night Live” episodes or “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” have a timeless quality to them in that they still have innovative qualities and superstar cast members who elevated the material. With “Rowan And Martin’s Laugh-In,” you have talented cast members and a plethora of great guest stars, but the show around them is a definite product of the 60’s. In the 70’s (which this sixth season aired in), the show feels dated even.

As mentioned before, the show has its moments like any comedy (Here Comes The Judge!), but at the end of the day, these series releases are really for the true fans of the show and those that may be nostalgic for it.

Presentation: Fullscreen. How does it look? The episode prints have defects here and there, but expect this sixth season to look like it did when it aired for better or for worse.

Audio Track: Unspecified. How does it sound? It does the job. No more, no less.

No extras.
