A Quiet Place Blu-ray Review

“A Quiet Place” is a solid little horror film.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world in which mysterious creatures attack and kill anything that makes sound, “A Quiet Place” revolves around a family of survivors comprised of a husband and wife named Lee and Evelyn and their three children Regan, Marcus and Beau. To say anything more would be spoiling the story, but viewers can certainly expect the family to endure plenty of terror, drama, and pain.

In a genre that is filled with remakes, reboots, and sequels as of late, it is refreshing to see an original studio horror film like “A Quiet Place.” While the simple, small scale, family centric story does resemble “Signs” a bit too closely at times, the film is, at the end of the day, still a crowd pleasing horror movie that delivers what it needs to- suspense. Yes, one can certainly argue that there are numerous dumb character actions that only exist as plot points to ramp up said suspense, but writers Bryan Woods, Scott Beck and John Krasinski make up for the shortcomings by crafting characters the audience cares about. Since this is solely focused on one family, viewers have plenty of time to get to know the Abbott family as they are essentially embarking on this perilous journey with them.

Going back to John Krasinski, he deserves a lot of credit for the film’s success. Not only does he co-write the largely dialogue free project, but he directs it and stars in it alongside his real life wife Emily Blunt. Both he and Blunt drive the film, but the actors who portray the children (Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe) are equally compelling.

Presentation: 2.39:1 1080p. How does it look? The bright colors really pop in hi-def.

Audio Track: Dolby Atmos. How does it sound? While this is a quiet film, the use of sound is important and effective (especially with this Atmos track).

Extras: * DVD copy * Digital copy * “Creating The Quiet- Behind The Scenes Of A Quiet Place” contains set footage, interviews, and discussions about various aspects of the production. * “The Sound Of Darkness- Editing Sound For A Quiet Place”- The title says it all * “A Reason For Silence- The Visual Effects Of A Quiet Place”- A glimpse into the creation of the creatures.

“A Quiet Place” will be released on Blu-ray, 4K and DVD July 10, 2018.
