Celtic Pride Blu-ray Review

Celtic.jpg

The cast carries “Celtic Pride.”

In “Celtic Pride,” superstitious Boston Celtics super fans Mike (a gym coach/father/failed player) and Jimmy (a lonely plumber) wind up kidnapping the NBA’s best player (a jackass selfish Utah Jazz superstar named Lewis Scott) in the hopes that their precious team will win the NBA Finals. That’s the film in a nutshell.

Directed by Tom De Cerchio and written and produced by Judd Apatow, “Celtic Pride” is a pretty one-note sports comedy that could have done more with the premise. Obviously, the film boasts a rather small budget which can be limiting in many respects, but you can’t help but feel like this story about sports fanaticism and friendship is missing something. A film like the underrated “Big Fan” definitely explored more with a similar concept. As is, however, the movie is still an enjoyable enough basketball movie (of which there are very few).

The sole reason the movie works at all is the cast. The chemistry between a loudmouth Daniel Stern, a nerdy Dan Akroyd, and a boastful Damon Wayans combines very well together. They just seem to be having an enjoyable time on screen together. On top of that, there’s a plethora of great cameos by the likes of Darrell Hammond, Bill Walton, Marv Albert, Larry Bird, Jeff Ross and Deion Sanders that add to the viewing experience.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.85:1. How does it look? The colors aren’t the sharpest but it’s an upgrade from the DVD…only just.

Audio Track: 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? A surprisingly lively track.

Extras: * Kino trailers * Commentary by director Tom De Cerchio and someone else whose real name is never used. Tom really packs this track with jokes galore so don’t expect anything serious here. A very weird track to be sure. More interesting than the usual fare.
