Rememory Blu-ray Review

“Rememory” is a memory not worth remembering.

After the inventor (Gordon) of a memory machine dubbed Rememory winds up dead, a model maker (Samuel) takes it upon himself to find out how Gordon died by stealing the machine Gordon was using. Soon Samuel begins to question suspects while also asking them to use the machine to find out where they were at the time of Gordon’s death. While all of this is going on, Samuel also uses the machine to come to terms with his own past trauma.

On the surface, this sci-fi mystery indie about loss, acceptance, and the past sounds like it has a lot of potential, but sadly “Rememory” never digs deep enough into the concept or characters. The dark, dreary, humorless and plodding material does the film no favors here as it crawls to an ending that makes little sense if you think about it. In fact, the movie just feels flat as a whole. About the only thing it accomplishes is that it make you want to watch “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind” (which handled similar material in a much more innovative fashion).

The only saving grace here is the cast. The late great Anton Yelchin makes a big impression as a troubled test subject (Todd) of the Rememory machine. Indie favorite Martin Donovan (Gordon) is his usual reliable self. Star Peter Dinklage proves once again that even in bad material he can still deliver a moving performance.

Presentation: 2.40:1 1080p. How does it look? The film shines in hi-def especially when the gorgeous memory visuals appear on screen.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? It does the job.

Extras: Digital copy, Lionsgate trailers, a short featurette titled “The Memories We Keep” that contains interviews, plot discussions, and more, and a commentary by Mark Palansky and Peter Dinklage which features entertaining banter between the 2.
