The Big Bang Theory Season 10 Blu-ray Review

In the tenth season, “The Big Bang Theory” matures dramatically but struggles comedically.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

In the 24 episode tenth season of the ever popular sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” it is a time of change for Sheldon, Leonard, Penny, Howard, Amy, Raj, and Bernadette. Leonard and Penny have another wedding ceremony, Sheldon, Leonard and Howard are working on a military project, Howard and Bernadette prepare to have a child together, Amy and Sheldon start living together, Raj struggles with being single and being financially independent. Other key plots involve families, Comic-Con, Stuart and Bert the geologist.

A lot of network sitcoms don’t change. They stick to what made them popular to begin with and coast on that. Basically, they’re comfort food for audiences. However flawed “The Big Bang Theory” may be, the writers deserve credit for letting the characters grow. There’s a real character progression from a dramatic standpoint. This is especially evident in season 10 which focuses on subjects such as adulthood, major life transitions, living situations, families, and careers. Take the episode “The Birthday Synchronicity” which is easily the highlight of the season. It’s a really heartfelt episode that focuses on the dynamics of the characters. Right now, that is when “The Big Bang Theory” is at its best.

On the downside, the jokes in this series are still iffy at best. Comedically, the show feels like it is stuck in a rut as it is telling the same soft and tired jokes and lines ad infinitum. The fact that the show is STILL poking fun at geeks and their interests is baffling to me. Not only should the series have moved past this by now, but it’s obvious the world has moved past this now given what is ruling pop culture in all forms of media. The comedy should be evolving along with the characters.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? The episodes have sharp transfers that are unquestionably better than HD TV broadcasts.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The dialogue, music, and laugh track are crisp and clear.

Extras: * Digital copy of the entire season. * 39 minutes of footage from 2016’s “The Big Bang Theory” San Diego Comic-Con panel. * “#JustAskBBT”- Cast members answer fan questions from Twitter. * “The Ever-Expanding Universe Of The Big Bang Theory”- The cast and crew discuss season 10. * “Mad Props”- A featurette on the show’s props. * “Who’s The Baby Now?”- A featurette about the newest member of the cast. * An amusing near 8 ½ minute gag reel.
