Ghostbusters 101 Issue 5 Comic Book Review

“Ghostbusters 101” is starting to become a bust.

In the fifth issue of the “Ghostbusters 101” comic series, the two sets of Ghostbusters (Venkman, Stantz, Zeddemore, and Spengler and Yates, Gilbert, Holtzmann, and Tolan) and their associates continue to deal with spatial anomalies, ghosts, and the dimensions bleeding into one another. This issue mainly involves a quick ghost busting at a cemetery and the Ghostbusters plotting to stop the breach and the ghosts from drawing power from the ley lines.

After 5 issues now, writer Erik Burnham continues to drop the ball with this hotly anticipated crossover series. With each passing issue, the hope is that it will improve and eventually come together, but it has yet to do so. Not only is the fifth issue just more of the same once again, but it’s greatest sin is that it’s flat-out boring. There’s technical jargon and endless exposition, very little action, and failed attempts at juggling characters. On top of that, Burnham more or less ignores the whole student element and continues to give Holtzmann more panel time than any other character by a long shot. Granted, Holtzmann is a fun character to play with, but why not not give other characters more of the spotlight? There’s so many to choose from here. He just keeps going to the same well in an almost predictable fashion now.

Artist Dan Schoening continues to try and make things more interesting than they really are here with his stylized animated series esque look. The artist does get to have some fun here with a certain ghostly mammal.

Note: The issues concludes with more class notes and Ghostbusters and IDW comic ads.
