Top 10 Most Anticipated Summer 2017 Films

With the summer movie season (May to August) starting up next week with the release of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” it’s time to look ahead to what is on the horizon. Now, I’m not just talking about blockbusters, comic book movies, sequels, and remakes here, but small indie releases as well. While I could have included more films, I have narrowed it down to just 10. On with the list!

  1. Spider-Man: Homecoming- As a big Spider-Man fan, I have been supremely underwhelmed by the past 5 Spider-Man films. To me, they have not captured the character or the comic book series. After the character’s fantastic appearance in “Captain America: Civil War,” however, I have a feeling we will finally get the proper Spider-Man film we have been waiting for.
  2. War for the Planet of the Apes- Given that the last 2 films were excellent, there’s no reason not to expect this to follow suit.
  3. 5-25-77- The wait for this coming-of-age movie has been rather long to say the least, but it appears it will finally be released next month.
  4. Wonder Woman- Hopefully, this will be a game changer for both DC and female superhero films.
  5. The Big Sick- After garnering major critical acclaim, I am certainly eager to see this autobiographical story about real life couple Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon.
  6. A Ghost Story- Admittedly, I know very little about this movie and I want to keep it that way. I am very intrigued to see what this supernatural drama is all about.
  7. Detroit- Kathryn Bigelow returns with a film about the 1967 Detroit riot. Could this be an Oscar contender? Time will tell.
  8. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2- Come on, who isn’t going to see this?
  9. Alien: Covenant- After the disastrous “Prometheus,” I am certainly nervous about Ridley Scott’s latest, but there’s no denying that there is great potential here.
  10. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets- This could easily turn out to be a “Jupiter Ascending” esque dud, but as a space opera fan, I am curious to see how this ambitious Luc Besson film turns out.
