Top 10 Horror TV Series

The X-Files- The Event Series Blu-rayThe Twilight Zone Season 1 DVDBates Motel Season 1 Blu-ray

As you may or may not have noticed, summer 2016 is loaded with new and returning horror shows like “Scream,” “Dead of Summer,” “The Strain,” and “Stranger Things.” With this in mind, I thought I would take a look back at some of the best television series in the horror genre (horror comedy included). On with the spooky centric list!

  1. Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace- Despite running a mere 6 episodes, this brilliant spoof of cheesy TV shows and horror entertainment has become a treasured gem by those who have been fortunate enough to watch it.
  1. The Twilight Zone (1959)- The legendary Rod Serling series may be a sci-fi series at heart, but this anthology show offered up plenty of stories in the horror realm such as “Nightmare At 20,000 Feet” and “Living Doll.”
  1. Buffy The Vampire Slayer- Joss Whedon’s cult classic remains one of TV’s best series thanks to the deep characters, smart writing, and rich mythology.
  1. Are You Afraid Of The Dark?- If you didn’t grow up in the 80’s or 90’s this show likely wasn’t on your radar. If you did, you know this ahead of its time Nickelodeon horror anthology show was delciously dark and twisted.
  1. Twin Peaks- David Lynch’s iconic series isn’t a straight up horror series as it’s a blend of multiple genres, but there’s some genuinely freaky stuff in this show such as Bob and the Black Lodge.
  1. Angel- The BTVS spin-off had its ups and downs, but it deserves a place on this list for seasons 1 and 5 alone.
  1. Tales From The Darkside- The best pure horror anthology series to date. The movie is an underrated gem too.
  1. Psychoville- A highly original little known British horror-comedy series courtesy of comic masterminds Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton.
  1. The X-Files- While classified more as a sci-fi show much like “The Twilight Zone,” “The X-Files” unquestionably delivered some of the very best in horror television with episodes like “The Host” and “Home.”
  2. Bates Motel- A thoroughly engrossing “Psycho” prequel series that boasts award worthy performances by Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore.

Notables: “Scream,” “Monstervision,” “Reaper,” “MTV’S Fear,” “Masters of Horror,” “Inside No. 9,” “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” “In The Flesh,” “Ash Vs. Evil Dead,” and “Tales From The Crypt.”
