DVDCORNER’S 2015 Holiday Gift Guide
Is it that time of year again? It seems like I put the finishing touches on my 2014 Holiday Gift Guide just yesterday. Alas, 2015 is already nearing an end and the rush to pick up gifts for the holidays has begun. So, if you’re in need of ideas for Black Friday, Cyber Monday,or Small Business Saturday, you’ve come to the right place as I have provided suggestions for Blu-rays, DVDs, books, and board/card games to pick up.
Let the list begin!
DVDs and DVD Sets:
*The Wonder Years: Complete Series (Locker Edition)- For the TV junkie on your shopping list, you will find no better gift than this wonderful Time Life/Starvista Entertainment complete series set of one of the best coming of age TV series of all time. The set contains all 6 seasons, hours of bonus content, and several bonus goodies such as notebooks and a yearbook containing behind-the-scenes pictures and information. If the price tag is too much, you can buy a more affordable complete series slipcase set. Additionally, seasons 1, 2, and 3 are available individually (with the other 3 to come) as is a season 1 and 2 pack.
*Batman: The Complete Television Series- Holy DVD set, Batman! This complete series collection has it all from great bonus features to jawdropping picture quality. Oh, and there’s 120 episodes worth of flat-out fun Batman entertainment too. Note: This set is also available on Blu-ray.
*Doctor Who: The Christmas Specials Gift Set- Since 2005, watching “Doctor Who” on December 25 has become a Whovian tradition as each Christmas brings a brand new special episode. What better way to get into the X-Mas spirit than by picking up a Gift Set containing all 10 Christmas specials (as well as “The End of Time” Part 2)? As an added bonus, the set comes with an exclusive bonus feature (“Ten Christmases”) and, best of all, a toy replica of the 12th Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver. Note: This set is also available on Blu-ray.
*Mr. Bean: The Whole Bean- In the pantheon of British comedy series, few are funnier than “Mr. Bean.” Rowan Atkinson is a master of physical comedy.
*Poirot and Marple: Fan Favorites Collection- When it comes to murder mystery/Detective series, Poirot and Miss Marple are easily two of the most beloved characters in the genre. Now, you can sample a few of the best episodes of each series such as the iconic “Murder on the Orient Express” episode from “Poirot”.
*RiffTrax Shorts! Shorts Assemble- When it comes to current comedy entertainment, nobody does it better than RiffTrax. If you want to get a sample of their genius, pick up this DVD that contains 10 cheesy short films with hilarious commentary provided by the RiffTrax trio of Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy.
*Monsters: The Complete Series- For those that aren’t aware, “Monsters” was the follow-up series to the great “Tales From The Darkside.” The 3 season horror anthology series offered up a lot of fun episodes like the creepy “The Match Game,” the vampire centric “Shave and a Haircut, Two Bites,” and the evil alien tale “A Face For Radio.”The series also boasted tons of guest stars from the likes of Steve Buscemi, Tony Shaloub, David Spade, Wil Wheaton, Gina Gershon, Pam Grier, and more.
*Mystery Science Theater 3000 Volume XXXIII- No Gift Guide is complete without the inclusion of a Shout Factory MST3K set. In this set, you get the episodes “Daddy-O,” “Earth Vs. The Spider,” “Teen-Age Crime Wave,” and one of the most underrated and hilarious episodes, “Agent For H.A.R.M.” Add in the fact that there are fantastic new bonus features and this is simply a must have fun for the TV junkie, comedy fan, Mistie, or cult TV show enthusiast on your list.
*Avengers: Age of Ultron- This action-packed sequel will surely be one of 2015’s biggest home video sellers.
*Boyhood- Richard Linklater’s 2014 masterpiece is essential for film buffs.
*Night and the City- An intense film noir classic that has been given a lovely new Criterion release.
*Ex Machina- This must-see brainy sci-fi story is one of 2015’s best films.
*Wild Tales- Foreign film fans will adore this quirky critically acclaimed Spanish anthology film.
*Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection- A brilliant collection of 12 short films including the much sought after “Frozen Fever.”
*Justice League: Gods and Monsters- A clever DC Comics animated film geared at a more adult audience.
*Tremors 5: Bloodlines- Monster movie lovers will undoubtedly be happy to see the “Tremors” franchise resurrected with this solid new entry.
*Breakin’/Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo Double Feature- Double Features don’t get much better than this. These two films are the quintessential “so bad they’re good” 80’s breakdancing movies.
*The Zero Theorem- Terry Gilliam returns to the sci-fi genre with incredible results. A great companion piece to “Brazil.”
*Africa- If you have recently received or purchased a Blu-ray player, there are few better ways to discover what it is capable of than by watching a picturesque and educational BBC Earth documentary series.
*The Rewrite- RomCom lovers will appreciate this charming little-seen movie that stars Hugh Grant and Marisa Tomei.
*Jamaica Inn- A stunning new hi-def release of a frequently overlooked Alfred Hitchcock gem.
*Guardians of the Galaxy- I Am Groot. Translation: This is the gift that keeps on giving.
*Big Hero 6- A fun and moving animated Disney film for the whole family. #BaymaxRules
*Inside Out- The surprisingly adult Pixar film is one of 2015’s best films. This will surely be a hot seller this holiday season.
*Make Way For Tomorrow- Classic film lovers will adore this Criterion Blu-ray release of Leo McCarey’s underappreciated 1937 drama.
*Mulholland Drive- David Lynch’s mindbending thriller gets the Criterion treatment. What else needs to be said?
*Princess Mononoke- I could put any number of Hayao Miyazaki films (or even the recently released “The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki”), but I opted to go with what is one of his most beloved and ambitious films in “Princess Mononoke.”
*Aladdin- It took many, many years, but Disney’s animated classic has finally hit Blu-ray. It was absolutely worth the wait.
*These Final Hours- An underrated post-apocalyptic film that deserves to be seen.
*Troll/Troll 2 Blu-ray- When it comes to bad movie classics, there’s no question that “Troll 2” ranks among the best. Whether you’re watching the “Oh my God!” scene or the bizarre popcorn sequence, the sequel is riddled with hilarious moments and, yes, plenty of originality. While “Troll” doesn’t get as much press as its sequel, it’s also a fun, weird, and corny monster movie that is well worth your time. Add in some great new bonus features like “The Making of Troll,” a new commentary for “Troll 2,” AND the inclusion of the popular full-length documentary “Best Worst Movie” about the cult classic “Troll 2” and this is an absolute bargain
*Tales From The Crypt/Vault of Horror Blu-ray- Since I’m a sucker for horror anthology films, I like to champion them as much as humanly possible so it shouldn’t be a surprise that this double feature Blu-ray set popped up on my list. Not only do you get two of the finest films in the subgenre, but you also get some great horror entertainment with tales like “…And All Through The House” and “Drawn and Quartered.”
*Star Wars Rebels Season 1- Let’s not kid ourselves, December is all about the long awaited release of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” So why not get in the “Star Wars” spirit by picking up the first season of the superb new animated series “Star Wars Rebels”?
*The Flash Season 1- When it comes to sheer TV entertainment, few shows are as much fun as “The Flash.” If you know someone obsessed with this series or are wanting to turn someone onto the show, race to pick up this season 1 Blu-ray set.
*Thunderbirds: The Complete Series- “Thunderbirds Are Go!” on Blu-ray thanks to Shout! Factory and Timeless Media. Now you can watch or relive this fun-filled Gerry Anderson marionette action series.
*Doctor Who Holiday Fleece Sweatshirt- We all need clothes, so why not bundle up this winter with something festive AND geeky? Allow me to direct you to ThinkGeek (http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/iook/?srp=2) where you can pick up a snazzy Doctor Who Holiday Fleece Sweatshirt emblazoned with either a Weeping Angel or, my personal favorite, the TARDIS.
*Dice Masters- Of all the board and card games out there, none are more exciting than the combative Dice Masters game from WizKids. To date, gamers have the choice of picking up the following Marvel, DC, Dungeons and Dragons, or Yu-Gi-Oh! Dice Masters sets: The Amazing Spider-Man, Age of Ultron, War of Light, Uncanny X-Men, Justice League, Battle for Faerun, Avengers vs. X-Men and Yu-Gi-Oh! *The Art of Film Magic: 20 Years of WETA- This is quite simply a must own book set for film lovers and or anyone interested in visual F/X.
*Resident Evil: Marhawa Desire- For the Manga fan on your list, I’d recommend this new 5 volume “Resident Evil” series.
*Red7- A quick, fun, strategic card game that has justifiably developed a fanbase.
*Star Wars: Dark Disciple- When it comes to the new “Star Wars” canon, this Asajj Ventress/Quinlan Vos ‘Clone Wars’ era book is the best yet.
*Doctor Who: Deep Time- If you know a “Doctor Who” fan, you might want to pick up this enjoyable 12th Doctor novel.
That will do it. See you next year!
