Boulevard Blu-ray Review

Boulevard Blu-ray

“Boulevard” is a great showcase for Robin Williams.

In one of his final on screen performances, the late Robin Williams plays a shy middle aged bank employee (Nolan) who isn’t comfortable with his life. His dad is in bad shape in a nursing home, his marriage is on the rocks, and he doesn’t seem interested in his job. While driving home one day, he picks up a young down on his luck male prostitute (Leo) whom he strictly becomes friends with. Through his interactions with Leo, Nolan gets the desire to come out of the closet and live the life he wants to live, but will he be able to?

From a story perspective, the beats of “Boulevard” are a bit too predictable. From the villainous pimp to the job promotion that will surely fall apart, it’s easy to see what will happen. As a character study though, Douglas Soesbe‘s script digs deep into the life of a man who is tired of living a lie. The character of Nolan is far and away the film’s strong suit when it comes to the actual script. However, the script pales in comparison to the talent of Robin Williams.

While Williams may have been best known for his comedic talents, his finest film roles were always dramatic films such as “Good Will Hunting.” “Boulevard” should now be put into that pantheon of great dramatic performances as well. Not only did he show great range and restraint here as the aging Nolan, but he gave a truly heartfelt and honest performance. It was easily his best work since the underrated “World’s Greatest Dad.”
