These Final Hours Blu-ray Review

These Final Hours Blu-ray

“These Final Hours” deserves more attention.

Set in Australia, “These Final Hours” revolves around a man (James) who is living out the final hours of his live before a meteor hits Earth and destroys humanity. Instead of spending time with his pregnant lover (Zoe), James selfishly plans to die at a big party. However, his plans change when he winds up rescuing a young girl (Rose) from two psychopaths. With Rose wanting to reunite with her father, James sets out on a new quest to help her out. Along the way, James also begins to figure out what is truly important in his life.

While there have been a lot of “end of the world” films as of late, “These Final Hours” is easily the best of recent years. The film does not make light of circumstances ala “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” and instead takes a deadly serious tone. In fact, the film is rather disturbing, atmospheric, and, above all, terrifyingly believable. What makes the film such a stand-out release is that amidst the events of the main story, writer/director Zak Hilditch gives viewers a glimpse at what the people around James are doing. Some are having sex, drinking, or partying while other people are murdering or committing suicide. The sense of lawlessness and chaos really paints a picture as to what the world would really be like in the event of a life ending catastrophe. It’s all the more impressive given the low budget.

“These Final Hours” is not all doom and gloom, however, as there are moments of humility involving James and Rose, James and his mother, and eventually James and Zoe. These scenes not only give the film heart, but feel genuine. They never come across as forced or soap opera like.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: Widescreen 1080p. How does it look? This Blu-ray disc contains a pristine hi-def transfer.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? From the party scene to the final scene, this track hits all the right notes.

The only extras here are Well Go USA Entertainment trailers and a “These Final Hours” trailer.
