Premature DVD Review

Premature DVD

“Premature” borrows far too much from past comedy films.

The plot: A nervous, nerdy high school student (Rob) discovers that everytime he has an orgasm, he can relive the same crucial day of his life over and over. With this gift/curse, can Rob try and figure out what he really wants in life or will he keep making the same mistakes?

If you’ve seen “American Pie,” “The Girl Next Door,” and, especially, “Groundhog Day,” you’ve already seen “Premature.” This predictable raunchy comedy is little more than a typically clichéd cinematic view of high school life complete with crude sex jokes, stereotypical characters (and humor), and a sappy romantic story involving the lead character realizing that the girl of his dreams is right there in front of him. While it’s mildly amusing to see how Rob reacts to living the same day over and over again, the jokes tend to fall flat more often than not.

The only saving grace here is the talented cast comprised of Alan Tudyk, Craig Roberts (who plays Rob’s pervy friend Stanley), Katie Findlay (Gabrielle), Adam Riegler (child prodigy Arthur) and John Carna (Rob). They all have great chemistry together as they elevate the otherwise mediocre material.

Presentation: 2.40:1. How does it look? This is a sharp looking indie film.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital 5.1. How does it sound? The DD track handles this primarily music and dialogue driven comedy supremely well.

* An alternate ending that was wisely cut.
