Begin Again Blu-ray Review

Begin Again Blu-ray

While a bit overdone, “Begin Again” is a pleasant little movie.

Formerly titled “Can A Song Save Your Life?,” “Begin Again” is another music centric film from “Once” director John Carney. In Carney’s latest film, the story revolves around a singer/songwriter named Gretta who is left in the dust after her musician boyfriend (Dave) lands a record deal, becomes a superstar, and cheats on her. While pondering what to do next, Gretta plays a song at a bar (at the request of her friend) which catches the attention of a down on his luck record exec (Dan). Believing she has star potential, Dan manages to persuade Gretta to record an adventurous outdoor album. Can the two change each other’s lives professionally and personally or will it fall apart?

What could have been a schmaltzy tale about the power of music turns out to be a rather quaint movie. Yes, the plot feels a bit too easy at times as things predictably turn out well in the end for the main characters, but the charming characters and catchy music performances will likely hook you in.

On the subject of the characters, it’s the ensemble cast that really makes this story come alive. Adam Levine (of Maroon 5 fame), CeeLo Green, Mos Def, Catherine Keener, future “The Late Late Show” host James Corden, Hailee Steinfeld, and Mark Ruffalo all give fine performances, but the real star here is Keira Knightley. Between her impressive singing abilities and her down to earth performance, she carries the film from start to finish. Without Knightley in the starring role, I’m not sure anyone would be talking about this film.

Presentation: 1.85:1 1080p. How does it look? A pitch perfect transfer.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? This DTS track handles the songs and dialogue splendidly.

* Digital HD copy.
* Lyric music videos for Adam Levine’s “Lost Stars” and Keira Knightley’s “Lost Stars,” “Tell Me If You Wanna Go Gome,” and “Like A Fool.”
* The Weinstein Company trailers.
* “The Making of Begin Again” contains film clips, cast and crew interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, discussions about the film, the usual.
