Rio 2 Blu-ray Review

Rio 2 Blu-ray

“Rio 2” is an agonizingly sloppy sequel.

Whether you like it or not, Blu and Jewel are back for another aerial adventure in “Rio 2.” In this outing, the couple brings their 3 bratty children to The Amazon when they learn of the existence of other Spix’s Macaw birds. As one would expect, Blu and company run into familiar faces (including Linda) and meet new characters (including Jewel’s father) on their road trip. Of course, their vacation doesn’t quite go as planned when they encounter trouble from illegal loggers (led by Big Boss), a vengeful Nigel (the cockatoo from the first film), and territorial Scarlet Macaws.

Like most animated films, “Rio 2” does at least have something to say. In the case of this sequel, there are important messages about roots, home, change, and saving the rainforest. Life lessons aside, however, “Rio 2” is somehow even more unwatchable than the first feature film.

While I’m sure many kids across the globe treasure these characters, “Rio 2” (and “Rio for that matter) offers little for adults. It lack the charm, wit, and humanity of a Pixar production and relies heavily on irritating songs, groan worthy comedy (see the fanny pack and poop jokes), pointless characters and storylines (Nigel’s storylines serves no purpose here), and nauseating pop culture references that date the film instantly. Perhaps the most troubling aspect about this slapped together sequel is that it’s overstuffed with subplots and ideas (101 agonizing minutes worth to be exact). Making a film busy and attention grabbing is not a bad thing by any means, but distracting the audience with unnecessary scenes and characters in an already overlong film is.

Presentation: 2.40:1 1080p. How does it look? It should come as no surprise that the colorful Blue Sky Studios animation looks perfect in hi-def.

Audio Track: 7.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? This 7.1 track is overflowing with life as the loud movie is filled with songs, sound f/x, and sharp sounding voice acting.

* Fox trailers and two ”Rio 2” theatrical trailers.
* DVD copy and Digital HD copy.
* A still gallery.
* A “What is Love” music video by Janelle Monae.
* A deleted scene called “Practice.”
* “Rio Refresher”- A recap of the first film.
* “You Be The Judge”- Mock character auditions.
* “I Will Survive” Multi-Language Sequence- The song is played in various languages.
* “Birds and Beats: The Singing Talents of Rio 2”- A featurette on the acting and singing voice cast members.
* “Nigel The Shakespearean Cockatoo And Friends”- A Blue Sky Studio tour with an emphasis on the Nigel character creation.
* “Music, Dance, Sing-Along Machine” gives dance and sing-along options as well the option to play the songs from the film.
* “Boom, Shake, Snap: The Local Sounds of Brazil”- A 4 part extra about Brazilian music and sound.

Overall Thoughts: Unless you or your children loved “Rio,” there’s no reason to tune into this abysmal sequel.
