Joy Ride 3: Roadkill Blu-ray review

Joy Ride 3- Roadkill Blu-ray

The third time is not the charm for “Joy Ride 3: Roadkill.”

After the forgettable Joy Ride 2 (2008), a third installment in the horror film franchise has been given a direct-to-DVD release here in 2014 under the name “Joy Ride 3: Roadkill.” In this flick, truck driver/serial killer Rusty Nail gets bloody revenge against a 6 person racing crew that messed with him on a highway road.

While the first “Joy Ride” was a decent horror-thriller, the sequels so far have felt entirely unnecessary. Instead of focusing on plot (of which there is VERY little), writer/director Declan O’Brien just throws in buckets of gore, a gaggle of dumb characters, and numerous car stunts/chases in order to assumingly appeal to the “Fast and Furious” crowd.

I suppose one can make a case that Declan O’Brien attempted to take the franchise in a new direction by visibly showing Rusty Nail (who is now played by Ken Kirzinger of “Freddy Vs. Jason” fame), but that ill-advised decision completely ruins the character. What made Rusty Nail so menacing in the first film is that he was an unseen force you only heard. Showing Rusty Nail ruins the mystique of the character completely. It doesn’t help that the incomparable Ted Levine isn’t voicing him anymore either.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? The hi-def transfer is nothing short of impressive.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? From the car crashes to Rusty Nail’s haunting voice, this track delivers.

Extras:
* DVD copy and Ultraviolet Digital HD copy.
* Fox trailers.
* Nearly 6 minut 3 pre-vis sequences.
* “Jewel’s Message”- A 1 minute scene with the character of Jewel.
* “Riding Shotgun With Declan: Director’s Die-Aries”- 4 short behind-the-scenes video diaries with director Declan O’Brien and other cast and crew members.
* “Finding Large Marge”- A short featurette about the casting of the Large Marge casting.
* “Road Rage: The Blood, Sweat, And Gears Of Joy Ride 3”- An 11 minute making of that contains film clips, behind-the-scenes footage, cast and crew interviews, discussions about the script and schedule, etc.
* A so-so commentary by writer/director Declan O’Brien and Brett Levison. The two talk about humor, scenes, sets, and so forth.

Overall Thoughts: Unless “Joy Ride” is rebooted for the big screen, it might be time to put a rusty nail in the coffin for this horror franchise.
