Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 Blu-ray Review

Batman- The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 Blu-ray

“Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2” is better than part 1, but it’s crammed with too many storylines.

Picking up where part 1 left off, the second part of the animated adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel “The Dark Knight Returns” finds Batman (and his only true ally Robin) facing off against a new commissioner, the Joker AND Superman. Amidst all of this, conflicts between the U.S. and the Soviet Union also begin to boil over which could lead to dire consequences for the world.

After dealing with the often absurd mutant plotline of part 1, Batman fans will happy to know that part 2 is all business (however over-the-top it may be). As I mentioned above, Batman first comes face to face with a Joker who seems more insane than ever before dealing with a Superman who is trying to keep Batman in check (possibly to the point of ending his life). The new commissioner, who took over from Gordon, also proves to be a thorn in Batman’s side as she views him as a criminal. To say all of these plotpoints feel like a bit much would be an overstatement. While certainly more engaging, intense and action-packed than part 1, part 2 feels like an overstuffed spectacle. The story is filled with villains, conflicts, character deaths, politics, and explorations of the morals (and sanity) of Batman’s actions. I’m all for having a deep story (especially a deep comic book story), but this is overkill.

Much like the first part, the second part also has its fair share of weirdness including a big breasted Nazi baddie (don’t ask), Batman dressing as an old woman, and the Joker’s robotic flying dolls. These scenes had a tendency to take me out of the story as they felt so fantastical and irrelevant to the overall story.

The animated feature, which is presented in 1.78:1 1080p, does a fine job of adapting the style of the Frank Miller’s work while also incorporating a more modern look. Suffice to say, the movie looks fantastic in hi-def and it’s certainly the best way to see the film.

The 5.1 DTS-HD MA audio track is bound to make comic fans happy. From the voice work to the explosions, this track is super, man.
