Cat Planet Cuties- The Complete Series Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Review

Despite some goofy humor, “Cat Planet Cuties” is surprisingly entertaining.

“Cat Planet Cuties” begins with a nerdy teen named Kio who encounters a cat alien (a Catian named Eris). As you can imagine, Kio’s world is immediately turned upside down as Eris draws all sorts of attention from the CIA, an extreme fan group called the Underside of Kitten Paw, immigration, a sci-fi loving group who wants to make alien contact,  and the villainous Dogsians. Other plots include death threats, a Catian fleet, romance between Eris, Aoi, Kio, and Manami, character changes for Kio’s friends Manami and Aoi, Eris in heat, Christmas, an assist-a-roid, and an OVA that revolves around games and bets. The series is comprised of 12 episodes and an OVA.

With a silly title like “Cat Planet Cuties,” it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that there is indeed some eye rolling material here. You can expect to see lots of fanservice (and even some nudity) and more cat puns than anyone can probably handle. However, if you can look past that (or get past that), ‘Planet’ is actually a surprisingly charming and entertaining anime series.

For me, the appeal of ‘Planet’ comes from the writing. I like that many episodes wind up sending the story into a different direction. For instance, with the characters of Manami and Aoi, you think they will drive the story one way, but the characters wind up changing thereby making their story arc go in a different direction.

The tone of the series is also pretty fascinating. As I mentioned before, there is a lot of lighthearted humor (and even jokes that poke fun at the series), but there’s also a dark edge to the series. Things can get serious real fast without the show feeling tonally awkward.

Summary: “Cat Planet Cuties” may not be for everyone, but it’s a fun series that is worth checking out.

The series, which is presented in widescreen 1080p, is very slick looking in hi-def. The colors are especially striking here.

This set contains English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 audio tracks. The English dub is good and never too over-the-top. The English voice cast really fit the characters here and their work should be applauded. The original language Japanese track is also solid
