The Descendants Blu-ray Review

“The Descendants” isn’t George Clooney or Alexander Payne’s best work.

The plot: Husband/father/lawyer Matt King struggles to reconnect with his family, juggle a major land deal, and come to terms with the fact that his wife (who cheated on him) is in a coma.

“The Descendants” is the type of movie that I respect, like, but don’t get the love for. The movie once again proves that George Clooney can act and that Alexander Payne can write/direct, and yet I feel like they’ve all done better work.

There’s no denying the fact that this a well-made family dramedy with a superb ensemble cast (especially rising star Shailene Woodley, Robert Forster, and the underrated Nick Krause), but the movie is not as emotionally affecting as it could be. Essentially, it’s almost like the movie is emotionally unavailable at times. Maybe it’s the land plot or the sometimes unidentifiable characters, but there seems to be an odd disconnect here.

Summary: “The Descendants” is worth a watch, but keep your expectations in check.

The Hawaii locals look fantastic in the 2.40:1 1080p format. You can’t ask for anything more.

The 5.1 DTS-HD audio track is a little soft, but it does the job. You have to keep in mind that this isn’t a very audio heavy film.

* Fox trailers and a theatrical trailer for “The Descendants.”

* 3 deleted scenes with Alexander Payne introductions.
* “Everybody Loves George”- The cast praises George Clooney.
* 3 music videos for “Will I Ever See You Again,” “Postcards From Paradise,” and “Honolulu’s Whisper.”

*”Working With Alexander”- The cast talks about working with Alexander Payne and Payne talks about his experiences in working on the film.
* “The Real Descendants”- John Morgan chats about the story of a real family that actually owns a part of Hawaiian land.
* “Hawaiian Style”- A fairly in-depth featurette about filming in Hawaii.
* “Casting”- A featurette about, you guessed it, the casting process.
* “Working With Water”- A featurette about shooting on the ocean.
* “Waiting For The Light”- A montage of behind-the-scenes/set footage.
* “The World Parade: Hawaii”- A silent B&W short film about Hawaii.
* “A Conversation With George Clooney And Alexander Payne”- The best part of this convo is Clooney and Payne geeking out about cinema.
