The Ten Commandments DVD 2011
This reissue of the Cecil B. Demille classic looks great on dvd but film collectors will probably want to go for the Blu-Ray edition.
I own a lot of different versions of this Biblical epic on DVD (at least three previous releases) and this is the first time the entire picture has been restored frame by frame. Colors never looked brighter and there is not even a hint of color shifting at reel changes. Sound is presented in Dolby surround plus the original mono. Extras are sparse on the two dvd set (Paramount wisely put the film on two separate dvds, in the two original parts where the film breaks for intermission, and most extras are on disc 2. They are sparse but include full length commentary by Katherine Orrison, author of Written in Stone: Making Cecil B. DeMille’s Epic The Ten Commandments, trailers and footage from its premiere. If you want more extra goodies, you will have to spring for the more expensive 6 disc blu-ray set, which includes a ton of extra material.
Bottom line-if you are still buying dvd, this is the best version to have but keep your previous versions for the extras.
