Secretariat (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) review

Secretariat Blu-Ray“Secretariat” is a Disney movie for family which bends the facts a bit.

Diane Lane and John Malkovich star in this inspiring family friendly story about one of the true champions of racing of the 20th century. Directed by Randall Wallace and written by Mike Rich (The Rookie), the film traces the life of both the owner and the horse.  To “enhance” the story, certain facts are either twisted around to make the plot more interesting (gee, Hollywood never does that) and certain characters are given the roles of good guy or bad guy.  As a movie though, Wallace and Rich have put together a very entertaining and enjoyable film, which is a true Disney family film.

The film is gorgeous to look at and audio is pulse ponding DTS-MA.  Up to the usual Disney high standards.

Extras on the blu-ray include a tremendous amount of information.  Here’s a listing:

Heart of A Champion
Choreographing the Races
A Director’s Inspiration: A Conversation with The Real Penny Chenery
Audio commentary by director Randall Wallace
7 Deleted Scenes with optional audio commentary by director Randall Wallace
Secretariat multi-angle simulation
Music video – AJ Michalka “It’s Who You Are”

The dvd only contains Heart Of A Champion, the music video and 3 deleted scenes with commentary. There is no digital copy with this set, which is a change from Disney’s past releases.  I don’t know why it was not included in this release.

For those wanting a good old fashioned inspiring sports story, you can’t beat this film.  Just don’t expect all the facts to be true upon doing research on the true story of “Secretariat”.  Like many Hollywood films, this one takes a lot of liberties with the facts to make a better and more interesting story.
