The Slammin’ Salmon Blu-ray Review

Unless you are a Broken Lizard fan, “The Slammin’ Salmon” is not worth your time.

Grades:

Content: D

Picture: A-

Audio: A-

Extras: B

The plot: A moody former boxer (Cleon Salmon)/restaurant owner needs $20,000 for a debt so he holds a contest for his strange assortment of waiters and waitresses to see who can bring in the most money. The winner will receive a $10,000 dollar prize and the loser will become Salmon’s punching bag.

The Broken Lizard comedy troupe, best known for their films “Super Troopers” and “Beerfest,” are very much a love ‘em or hate ‘em act. Personally, I never understood their appeal. The characters are all one-dimensional and the humor is tired and unfunny. Take ‘Salmon,’ for instance. The attempts at humor in this film involve coleslaw pant stuffing, an albino hunting story, punching a swordfish, a waiter off his meds, a diamond ring being pooped out, and a burnt face. Granted, it’s a niche brand of comedy mainly for the college crowd, but the sophomoric and gross-out humor gets old pretty fast.

About the only aspect that drove away boredom was seeing cameos from the likes of Jim Gaffigan, Vivica A. Fox, Morgan Fairchild, Olivia Munn, Will Forte and Bishop himself- Lance Henriksen. It’s a shame they were all stuck in this movie.

Summary: Strictly for Broken Lizard fans.

The 1.78:1 1080p picture quality is fine. This isn’t the type of movie you want to showcase on Blu-ray by any means, but it’s a solid transfer nonetheless.

This Blu-ray disc includes Dolby Surround 5.1 and PCM 5.1 audio tracks. Both tracks do their job.

Extras include a theatrical trailer, a featurette containing interviews with the Broken Lizard gang in the “Hellish Kitchen: Art Imitates Restaurant Life,” and two commentary tracks. One track features Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme and the other features Paul Soter, Jay Chandrasekhar, and Erik Stolhanske. Both are worth listening to if you want some behind-the-scenes info. on the film or if you dig Broken Lizard.
