The plot: The series begins with Haruhi, an honor student at the Ouran Academy, looking for a quiet room to study. Unfortunately, Haruhi stumbles into a room with a Host Club that contains six rich, handsome male students (Tamaki, the Hitachiin twins, Kyoya, Honey, and Mari) whose job is to entertain ladies. After accidentally breaking an expensive vase in the room, Haruhi is hired to become a host to pay off the debt. The only problem? Haruhi, whom the hosts thought was a male, is actually a female. So now, Haruhi has to disguise herself as male host to repay the debt. Stories in this 26 episode series involve the Host Club helping out customers, a beach trip, a Girl Academy, Haruhi’s family, character centric episodes about Honey, Kyoya, Tamaki, and the twins, a dream, a newspaper interview, a Halloween event, and a school festival. ‘Ouran’ is based on the manga series of the same name,

I should say upfront that I don’t usually care for the comedic anime series. So, you can imagine my surprise when I found “Ouran High School Host Club” to be quite funny. It’s a fast paced series filled with jokes about everything from instant coffee and a bunny to cosplay and sight/word gags. What really makes the series work; however, is the chemistry between the characters. The six Host Club members are all quirky, memorable, snobby characters and their interactions with each other (and Haruhi) keeps you watching. I found myself constantly laughing at the over the top and sometimes phony behavior of the hosts. These characters are just flat-out likeable.

Summary: “Ouran High School Host Club” is definitely worth checking out.

The 4:3 fullscreen animation quality is pretty basic. There’s nothing to ride home about here, but the show still looks decent regardless.

This DVD set includes both Japanese and English Stereo tracks. The English track is surprisingly a lot of fun here. The voice actors and actresses do a great job of bringing the characters to life. The Japanese Stereo track is also solid.

* Funimation trailers.
* Commentary on episodes 1, 5, 6, 18, 22 and 24 by the English ADR director and voice actors and actresses. They are certainly enthusiastic about their work, but again, these tracks are not worth your time as they were not involved in creating the series.
* “Ouran High School Host Club” Manga pages.
* Textless opening and closing songs.
* 2 sets of English voice acting outtakes.
