RiffTrax Live- Christmas Shorts-Stravaganza DVD Review

The RiffTrax gang spread holiday cheer early in the year with the “Christmas Shorts-Stravaganza” DVD release.

Back in December of 2009, the RiffTrax gang (consisting of Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett) shot a live Christmas special in San Diego that was broadcast in movie theaters across the country. Now, several months later, the live show is thankfully available on DVD for everyone to enjoy. Included in this release are eight shorts (and three commercials). The list: A bizarre live-action/animation blended short titled “Christmas Toyshop,” the Santa centric “A Visit To Santa,” a Christmas Tree story called “Christmas Rhapsody,” a musical pork short dubbed “Three Magic Words,” a short film telling of “The Night Before Christmas,” a weird magic doll/Santa short called “A Christmas Dream,” a swimming short titled “Sports,” and an animated “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” short. Also included are three toy commercials for Ding-A-Lings, Gaylord, and Jimmy Jet.

For those folks who cracked up at the “RiffTrax Live- Plan 9 From Outer Space” disc, I’m happy to report that this Christmas special is even funnier than that release. Whether the RiffTrax gang is mocking the mumbling in “A Visit To Santa” or pointing out creepy sexual scenes in the “Rudolph” cartoon, you’re in for a laugh-filled 95 minutes. My personal favorite moments included the jokes about Santa in “The Night Before Christmas,” Mike’s Al Pacino impressions, the Yahoo Serious reference in “A Christmas Dream,” the cracks at the tree narration in “Christmas Rhapsody,” and special guest Weird Al’s singing riffs in “Three Magic Words.”

The only short I could have done without is the swimming centric “Sports” which was random, out of place, and not all that amusing.

Summary: I could go on and on about all the hilarious moments in “Christmas Shorts-Stravaganza,” but I don’t want to spoil the fun. Just buy the disc and see it for yourself!

As with any RiffTrax shorts release, the picture quality varies in quality. Likewise, the audio quality is all over the place. In shorts like “A Visit To Santa” the audio overpowers the riffing a bit while other shorts such as “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” have fine sound levels and thus the riffing sounds clear.

The only extra is a two minute behind the scenes slideshow.

  1. I saw the show in a Flint, MI theater with about 30 die hard fans- it was extremely funny.

On another note, I saw Cinematic Titanic live in Royal Oak, MI a couple months later. Very funny.

Love the two camps- maybe someday they’ll work together again.

  2. I was at the live show and had a blast. Sooo funny!! I bought the dvd and got to relive it again. At the end of the show Mike says “we’re off to stone” which might confuse you if you weren’t there. They invited everyone who was at the show to Stone House Brewery to meet them and have a drink. They were all very nice and even “Wierd” Al Yankovic was there. So to anyone who didn’t know what they were talking about, now you know.
