The story, which is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid,” revolves around a Goldfish girl (Ponyo) who escapes from her sea sorcerer father and befriends a young human boy named Sosuke. As Ponyo spends time on land, she realizes she wants to become human so she tries use magic to do so. Unfortunately, her actions have consequences as the leaked magic cause chaos for Earth’s oceans. Can Ponyo live as a human? Will Earth be restored to the way it was?

With “Ponyo,” writer/director Hayao Miyazaki once again proves why he’s one of the best and most celebrated directors around. His take on the classic fairy tale “The Little Mermaid” is inventive, strange, and wonderful all at once thanks to memorable characters (namely the ham loving Ponyo and the kind hearted Sosuke), relatable themes about the environment and friendship, and let’s not forget the gorgeous traditional animation. As with his previous films such as “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” Miyazaki has created a visually stunning fully realized environment (in this case a seaside town) that he brings to life effortlessly as per usual.

Summary: “Ponyo” is one of the best films of 2009. Hopefully, we will see more of Miyazaki’s films on Blu-ray soon!

From the opening underwater sequence with all of the sea creatures, I was in awe of the widescreen 1080p picture quality here.

This disc includes both English 5.1 DTS-HD and Japanese 5.1 Dolby Digital tracks. The English dub contains an impressive all-star cast, but the Japanese audio track is great too. The actors who voiced Sosuke and Ponyo’s voices are much better on the Japanese track.

Extras:
* DVD copy of “Ponyo.”
* Disney trailers.
* “Meet Ponyo”- Producers of the American dub Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall introduce the film.
* “The World Of Ghibli: Enter The Lands and Behind The Studio”- ‘Lands’ is a neat interactive feature that allows you to choose a character from one of Miyazaki’s many films. Once you click on a character, you are introduced to the characters and stories of the films. ‘Studio’ includes everything from interviews, featurettes about the characters score, voice work of “Ponyo,” etc.

* Viewers can watch “Ponyo” with original Japanese storyboards.
