“Paper Heart” is a flawed, but interesting mockumentary.

Charlyne Yi (best known for her role in “Knocked Up”) is the star of “Paper Hear,” a mockumentary film of sorts.  The basic premise is that Yi doesn’t believe in love, so she and director Nicholas Jasenovec (played by Jake Johnson) travel to places such as Los Angeles, New York and Nashville to interview people about love. She speaks to judges, musicians, married couple, a divorced man, a gay couple, etc. to get their perspective on love. While attending a party one night, Yi meets Michael Cera. At first she doesn’t think much of him, but the two hit it off and eventually develop feelings for each other. The problem? They have no privacy as everything is being shot on film. Can Michael and Charlyne’s relationship survive the film or is their relationship doomed?

“Paper Heart” is an interesting experimental mockumentary film about finding love, but it’s gimmicky structure is also its downfall. By staging the romance between Michael Cera and Charlyne Yi, you can’t really buy their relationship in this movie because it is so forced (and obviously staged). That’s not a knock on Yi or Cera (who are both talented actors that give charming performances here), it’s just a criticism of the material itself. Had the film been structured a different way (like with a Christopher Guest film), ‘Paper’ could have come across as a stronger film.

Another issue I had was with the documentary style aspect of the film. Yi’s quest and her interviews were rather uninvolving. She never really gets to the heart of the matter with the interview subjects.

Footage from several cameras are include in the movie, but generally the documentary looks as clean as can be on this 1.78:1 1080p Blu-ray disc.

Charlyne Yi, Michael Cera, the film crew, and the interviewees all sounded pretty clear on this Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track.

* Digital copy and Starz/Anchor Bay trailers and a “Paper Heart” trailer.

* Music video for Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera’s “Heaven” tune.
* 17 deleted scenes.
* 6 ½ minutes of weird live musical performances by Charlyne Yi.
* “Paper Heart Uncut”- 7 ½ minutes of outtakes.
* “The Making Of Paper Heart” (10:44) contains behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, etc.
* “Love Interviews With The Comedians”- Jason Ritter, Paul Rust, Bill Hader, Bobcat Goldthwait, David Krumholtz, Paul Scheer, Demetri Martin, Rob Hubel,  give their views on love.
