Law and Order: Special Victims Unit Season 27 Blu-ray Review

The long running spin-off maintains its consistency.

Since 1999, the “Law and Order” spin-off “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit” has continued to endure on network television. As with any show that has gone on for a long period of time there’s bound to be changes and there’s certainly changes abound in the 21 episode 27th season of the procedural. Michele Fazekas takes over as showrunner, a pair of new characters enter the spotlight with the hotheaded newbie Detective Jake Griffin (who has a character arc throughout the season) and Assistant DA CJ (who works with Sonny), Donald Cargen has passed away (his memorial takes place in the season premiere) and Sgt. Amanda Rollins rejoins the SVU roster alongside main characters Captain Olivia Benson, Sgt. Fin, Detective Terry Bruno, Captain Curry, Sgt. Amanda Rollins and Assistant DA Sonny, and Chief Kathryn Tynan.

In terms of the season 27 storylines, expect to see the SVU investigate assaults, murder, AI, kidnappings, sex trafficking, sexual abuse, and a child predator. Other plotlines involve the SVU team protecting a witness, attacks on team members, accusations against a Judge, character appearances (including Detective Joe Velasco), and character arcs involving Jake Griffin, Chief Tynan, Olivia getting too invested in court cases, Captain Renee, and so forth.

While some diehard fans may have differing opinions, “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit” has always been a consistent dual procedural involving sex crime investigations and courtroom drama. Cast members may come and go and changes occur, but the show always continues on just like it always has (at least that’s how I see it). The series is at its best when it’s taking headline stories and working them into the show. For instance the episode “Clickbait” really exposes the ever growing issues of AI and the legal issues regarding it. Likewise, the “Hubris” episode explores the deeply flawed foster care system in an emotional episode. It’s episodes like these that still make the show both topical and poignant.

Character wise, the introduction of Jake Griffin left me a bit cold as he came off as a bit grating. CJ, on the other hand, was a likable new character thanks to the personable performances by Norma Kuhling. As usual, Mariska Hargitay (Olivia), Ice-T (Fin) and Kevin Keane (Bruno) remain the best characters currently on the series.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? Expect crisp hi-def episode transfers.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? It does the job, but is a little too soft in certain dialogue heavy moments.

No extras.
