Bad Counselors DVD Review

“Bad Counselors” is a comedy without the comedy.
Written by Taylor Grabowsky, Dexter Masland and Ryan Gunnarson, “Bad Counselors” is a faith-based comedy revolving around two frat guys (Grayson and Tyler). After being arrested for a party that gets out of hand, Grayson and Tyler are offered the chance to do 120 hours of community service. The two decide to sign-up/pose as Christian camp counselors at Camp Burning Bush without revealing they are doing community service. Despite going into this with less than noble intentions, they just might find their lives forever changed and perhaps find romance along the way.
Looking at the cover, one would think director Chris Dowling’s “Bad Counselors” is a raunchy low-budget comedy, but it most certainly is not. It is in fact a faith-based comedy. While it’s refreshing not to see the same old cliched faith-based drama, this one-joke movie is in dire need of actual comedy. Instead of taking advantage of hijinks or two frat guys being out of place at a Christian camp, the movie takes itself far too seriously as it explores themes of responsibility, truth, maturity, forgiveness, romance, and redemption. The attempts at humor are entirely flat unless you find a coffee shop named The Holy Roast or a frat bro stumbling to lead a prayer the height of comedy.
The one thing “Bad Counselors” has going for it is the cast. Brec Bassinger of “Stargirl” fame charms as the Pastor’s daughter Jenna. Matt Cornett (best known for “High School Musical: The Musical”) fits the lead as Grayson well. Ramon Reed gives an earnest performance as Tyler. Last, but not least Chris Klein delivers a credible performance as Pastor Tom. The actor shows true range going from actual raunchy comedy films like “American Pie” to the now Christian comedy “Bad Counselors.”
