Jackass: Best And Last Blu-ray Review

“Jackass: Best And Last” is not the best of the series, but it is a moving farewell.
“Jackass: Best And Last” is the fifth and final installment of the “Jackass” film franchise. Whether or not we get more Jackass Presents films remains to be seen. Unlike the prior entries which focused on newly filmed stunts, the fifth film combines new and old stunts featuring the OG cast (Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Wee Man, Johnny Knoxville, Preston Lacy, Dave England and Danger Ehren) and the new cast (Poopies, Dark Shark, Jasper, Zach Holmes, Rachel Wolfson and the newest addition Larry the robot). Even though Bam Margera didn’t join the OG cast in the past two outings, his prior stunts are featured here as are the late Ryan Dunn’s classic moments. Fans even get to see a few unaired moments like the opening sequence of Johnny Knoxville being shot and a Bam Margera sequence cut from “Jackass Forever.” Also included here are interview segments with select cast and crew along with the usual celebrity cameos (Paul Walter Hauser being the main one).
As someone who has watched the CKY series and “Jackass” since the beginning, director Jeff Tremaine’s “Jackass: Best And Last” proved to be an emotional farewell albeit an uneven one. It’s understandable why the creative team wanted to pay homage to the past and present (while also honoring Bam Margera and Ryan Dunn), but it all feels a bit too much like a clip show tribute special. The ratio of old and new scenes is unbalanced and the film could have used more newly shot material. The new cast in particular gets shafted here with Rachel Wolfson having zero to do outside of being in the background. Sure, there are some amusing new bits here like Poopies on the balance beam, the escape room, Poopies lip injection, Zach being lifted and lowered in the air, and the revolting “Human Pretzel,” but you’re left wanting more (especially for a finale). The climactic full circle giant shopping cart bit is a nice touch though.
The archival material includes a lot of fan favorites like the porta potty bungee, the Brad Pitt kidnapping, the little person bar brawl, and, of course, the toy car in Ryan Dunn’s butt.
In watching scenes from the past and present, you see just how much the Jackass gang have aged and how all good things must come to an end. The Jackass crew’s antics may often be dumb, but they were always pushing boundaries, coming up with creative pranks, and striving to make people laugh (which we truly need in this day and age). “Jackass: Best And Last” certainly feels a bit rushed, short, and in need of more new material, but as a send off, it’s effective nonetheless.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 1.85:1 1080p. How does it look? This is the best “Jackass” has ever looked. Even the archival footage looked sharper!
Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? You’re not going into this franchise expecting high quality audio, but it does the job.
Extras:
* Digital copy
* “Deleted Scenes Montage”- A 17 ½ montage of deleted material involving eggs, baseballs, Truth or Dare, “The Kick Drum,” and the nastiest and funniest segment, the toenail bit.
