Landman Season 2 Blu-ray Review
Second verse, same as the first.
In the 10 episode second season of Taylor Sheridan’s “Landman” (who wrote all 10 episodes), the through line is change. Cami takes over M-Tex but gets up in legal trouble and money woes, Cooper tries his hand at the oil biz, Tommy and Angela are back together, Tommy’s mother passes away, Tommy’s retired father T.L. re-enters his life, Cooper and Ariana become engaged, Rebecca and Charlie develop a relationship, Ainsley becomes a cheerleader at TCU, the head of a drug cartel (Gallino) who becomes involved in oil businesses, and Tommy starts his own oil biz.
The first season of “Landman” was a massive hit, but it fell flat when it came to the family drama, Sheridan’s struggles to write convincing women characters, and the cartel plotline which feels like it’s for another show entirely. With the sophomore season, all of these issues remain and only get worse. The show goes full blown soap opera here to the point that it felt like I was watching “Dallas.” The show also leans more into family and relationships instead of focusing on the show’s strengths which are the various aspects of the oil world. It’s as if the show is being watered down and doubling down on all of the elements that do not work.
On the plus side, Billy Bob Thornton is still the MVP here. He could read a phone book and it would be thrilling. Demi Moore and Andy Garcia get more to do this season which certainly benefits the show. The presence of Sam Elliott also classes it up even though it would have been nice to see the character have a bigger arc.
