The Descent Part 2 4K UHD SteelBook Review

“The Descent Part 2” is a needless sequel.  

2009’s “The Descent Part 2” is a sequel to the highly overrated “The Descent.” The story (written by James McCarthy, J Blakeson and James Wakins) takes place 2 days after the events of the first film. Sarah has survived and is in the hospital, but is in a state of shock. She can’t seem to remember what exactly happened. The search is on for the 5 missing women and the local Sheriff, Deputy, and 3 cave experts (Greg and couple Cath and Dan) need Sarah’s help to find them. The group enters the cave via an old mine shaft operated by a shady old man (Ed) and, as you might expect, they encounter more bloody creature carnage. 

In his only directing credit, famed editor Jon Harris helms the sequel to the surprise hit “The Descent,” but he doesn’t have much to work with here. Much of the horror film is merely comprised of characters (with very little character) wandering around dark caves barely lit by flashlights with the occasional cheap jump scares of creatures popping out. The sequel blatantly ignores the ending of the first film and Sarah is somehow dragged from the hospital back into the caves despite trauma and her unstable mental and physical health. That alone is an absolutely ridiculous plot point, but something even more ridiculous occurs when a character from the first film returns later in the film (no spoilers). To say it all feels slapped together is an understatement. It even looks cheap from a production standpoint. If you just want to see creatures and gore though, this sequel has you covered.

In terms of the cast, Shauna Macdonald (and another cast member from the first) reprise their roles here, but both of them are phoning it in. Gavin O’Herlihy of “Willow” fame is also wasted here.

Presentation:2.35:1  2160p. How does it look? The 4K restoration offers up a superior transfer. Fans will no doubt be pleased.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? From the music to the jump scares, this 5.1 track is effective.
