Your Name 4K UHD SteelBook Review

“Your Name” is a moving and surprising anime film.  

2016’s “Your Name” is a Japanese animated film from Makoto Shinkai (who is best known for the great “5 Centimeters Per Second” and “Weathering With You”).. The story starts out as a body swap tale revolving around a high school girl (Mitsuha ) and a high school boy (Taki). The two live opposite lives. Mitsuha is suffocated by living in the small fictional country town Itomori while Taki lives in the busy Tokyo (and works at a restaurant job there as well). A few times a week, Mitsuha and Taki inexplicably switch bodies. Wanting to know more about Mitsuha, Taki seeks her out once he’s in his own body again and that’s when a big twist occurs that turns the entire story on its head. Things are certainly not what they seem. To say anything more would be spoiling the experience. Believe me when I say it’s best watched knowing as little as possible.

Since its release, “Your Name” has gone on to become one of the most beloved Japanese animated films of all time. It’s not hard to see why. Not only has writer/director Makoto Shinkai created a truly original story about romance, gender, time, places, nature, dreams, and connections, but he crafted a dazzling cinematic animated feature. Whether you’re seeing the detailed cityscapes of Tokyo or the picturesque Itomori, CoMix Wave Films animation will take your breath away. The locations are just as much a character in this story as Mitsuha and Taki.

It’s tough to describe the story without divulging the twist, but the twist does alter the movie completely. It takes the story in a different direction from the first half of the film. Shinkai really subverts expectations, but in a good way. To say this movie is unpredictable is an understatement and that’s a rare thing in this day and age. Although the twist scenario may be a bit puzzling the more you think about it (I’m being intentionally vague here), it gives the story more depth and makes the ending that much more rewarding. It allows for Shinkai to explore the weighty themes and makes the viewers further invested in Mitsuha and Taki’s character journeys. 

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 2160p. How does it look? The 4K picture quality is positively breathtaking. The colors look so vibrant here.

Audio Track: Japanese and English 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How do they sound? The English dub is decent enough, but the original language Japanese track is the clear option.
