Reacher Season 3 Blu-ray Review
A return to form.
For the 8 episode third season of “Reacher,” Lee Child’s novel “Persuader” is adapted. The season begins with Jack Reacher saving a young man (Richard) from being kidnapped. He returns Richard to his father Zachary (a businessman and suspected drug smuggler). It turns out this attempted kidnapping was all staged as Reacher is going undercover for the DEA. The DEA are trying to find a missing agent (Teresa) and Reacher is searching for Lt. Col. Quinn whom he has a history with. Zachary offers Reacher to be his son’s bodyguard and he accepts the position in order to snoop around for clues and potential answers. Aiding him on his mission are DEA agents Susan and Guillermo along with his friend and former U.S. Army Master Sgt. Frances Neagley (who will soon have her own spin-off series). Elsewhere in the series are subplots involving an amnesiac Quinn, Russian gangsters, the ATF and Quinn’s seemingly unkillable bodyguard Paulie.
After a deeply disappointing and poorly scripted second season, “Reacher” bounces back with a thrilling third season (even though it’s still not on the level of the explosive debut season). This season gets back to basics in delivering what fans want- Reacher being the central focus again, action (lots of shootouts here), mysteries galore, likable new characters (like Susan and Guillermo), and Reacher facing off against a towering foe that even he struggles to battle against in Paulie. What more could you want?
Speaking of Jack Reacher, it’s clear that this is the role Alan Ritchson was born to play. You just buy him as the methodical elite former military man turned nomad from the get go. Ritchson gives a truly magnetic performance. Maria Sten once again shines as Neagley. It will be exciting to see her in her own series. Sonya Cassidy scene steals as the Boston DE agent Susan who develops chemistry with Reacher. Anthony Michael Hall is memorable as the criminal Zachary while Olivier Richters perfectly plays the villainous henchman Paulie. Most of the best (and over the top) action features Reacher v Paulie this season.
