EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert 4K UHD Review

“EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert” is a must for fans of the King of Rock and Roll.

While making the “Elvis” biopic, director Baz Luhrmann uncovered outtake footage of Elvis in concert from his concert films “Elvis: That’s The Way It Is” and “Elvis On Tour” along with 45 minutes of audio featuring Elvis talking about his life. After the completion of “Elvis,” Baz Luhrmann started work on a combination documentary and concert film titled “EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert” featuring the above listed material along with TV appearances, interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and more.

For the Elvis fans who have never heard or glimpsed his live material (which is the heart and soul of his work in my book), “EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert” gives you an up close and personal glimpse into not only the whirlwind life of Elvis, but his electric stage presence. Whether he’s belting out a hit like “Burning Love” or singing the underrated “In The Ghetto,” the musician was a one of a kind entertainer and singer. He truly does it all from singing, dancing in a host of colorful costumes, cracking jokes, interacting with the audience, and pushing his body to the physical limits in every single performance. Off the stage, we (the audience) see a myriad of behind-the-scenes footage and rockin’ rehearsals that showcases the artist in a variety of settings. 

The creative decision to only feature Elvis audio in which he essentially narrates the film through his own words also proved to be deeply effective and is a refreshing change of pace from having the talking heads style of documentary. It makes the film more intimate and personal.

For the die hard fans like myself out there this film acts as more of a companion piece to “Elvis: That’s The Way It Is” and “Elvis On Tour” and may feel a bit too similar to past releases. The film also runs a bit too short for my liking and would have benefited from more unseen footage and performances. Still, there’s no denying that ‘EPiC” is an expertly edited film that showcases the King as one of the best live artists of all time.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.39:1 2160p. How does it look? The restored footage looks positively dazzling on 4K. The colors are noticeably vibrant in every frame. 

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? Expect an absolutely dynamite audio experience of Elvis performing (largely from Las Vegas).

Extras include Blu-ray copy, teaser and trailer, and 2 TV spots.
