Mortal Kombat 2 4K UHD Review
“Mortal Kombat 2” improves upon the first for the most part.
In the sequel to 2021’s “Mortal Kombat,” a new tournament is about to begin and Johnny Cage has been selected as the 5th Champion of Earthrealm to participate alongside Cole Young, Sonya, Liu Kang, and Jax. The stakes could not be any higher as Shao Kahn is plotting to conquer Earthrealm with the help of a special amulet which grants him immortality. Earthrealm’s champions get some much needed help from Kitana who is working with Raiden in an attempt to stop Shao Kahn (who murdered her father) and free Edenia from his reign.
2021’s “Mortal Kombat” had its fair share of flaws, but turned out to be one of the better video game adaptations. With 2026’s “Mortal Kombat 2,” the film certainly addresses the flaws of the first film. Cole Young has been demoted more than any character I’ve seen since Jar Jar Binks, there’s an actual tournament this time around, and there’s plenty of martial arts fighting action. The sequel also injects fan favorite new characters such as Johnny Cage and Kitana. Kitana (played by Adeline Rudolph) in particular carries the movie on her back. She’s a total badass and her character arc is the highlight of the narrative.
On the subject of the script, it may lack a bit of a steadier narrative flow and a more in depth character focus that the first film had, but it is still largely satisfactory. Writer Jeremy Slater and director Simon McQuoid cater to the fans more here with references, character cameos (like Baraka), a further exploration of the world of “Mortal Kombat” and a juicy set-up for a potential third entry. Are there too many teleporting characters? Yes. Is the Kano arc a bit of a retread yes? Is there a general kitchen sink approach to the sequel? Also, yes. At the same time, this sequel does what it should do- deliver a crowd pleasing movie based off of a classic fighting video game that really should have done better in its theatrical run.
Going back to the cast, Adeline Rudolph truly is the star here as Kiatana. Her career should take off after this. Karl Urban is an undeniable geek icon, but his performance as Johnny Cage is a tad bit underwhelming. Not only is he looking a bit long in the tooth here, but he’s not quite as energetic as one would hope. Don’t get me wrong, he still embodies the character, but I was just hoping for more from him. Returning cast members like scene stealing Josh Lawson (Kano), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade) , and Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion) are also noteworthy in their respective roles.

Audio Track: Dolby Atmos. How does it sound? A pleasingly thunderous track in which you can feel after punch and kick.
