Obsession 4K UHD Review

“Obsession” is the best film of 2026 thus far.

After making a promising debut with the underrated “Milk & Serial,” writer/director Curry Barker followed up that project with an original horror film titled “Obsession.” The story revolves around friends and music store co-workers Bear and Nikki. Bear has feelings for Nikki but can’t summon the courage to tell her how he feels. While in a new age shop, Bear comes across a “One Wish Willow” novelty toy that allegedly grants its owner a single wish. He uses it and wishes that Nikki would love him more than anyone in the world. To his astonishment the wish comes true, but it is a wish he will soon regret. Nikki falls in love with Bear to an overwhelming degree to the point where her behavior becomes disturbing. Moreover, Bear discovers that the real Nikki is tragically trapped inside of her own body as the wish version of Nikki has taken control. Can the wish be undone? Will Nikki ever return to her former self after Bear ruined her life with the wish? Will the wish have dire consequences on others around Bear? All is revealed in the end.

“Obsession” is everything I love about cinema rolled into one. Curry Barker takes a tried and true “be careful what you wish for” concept seen in everything from “Goosebumps” to “The Simpsons” and puts his own fresh spin on it with this deep horror story about toxic relationships, wish fulfillment, possessiveness, codependency, cowardice, and jealousy. It’s an unsettling and at times darkly humorous tale that has shocked audiences (and couples) to their core across the globe. The film even dips into body horror territory with Nikki being held prisoner in her own body (a truly frightening idea). More than that, Barker has crafted an unforgettable horror film that grabs you and never lets go. The idea is so simple and yet he does so much with it by exploring so many themes within it. The concept also perfectly lends itself to all manner of wishes and themes that can be explored in sequels/spin-offs.

You can’t talk about “Obsession” without mentioning what a great success story it is. Not only did this indie film become a mega box office hit, but it showed Hollywood and audiences that original cinema is still alive and that people crave it. Curry Barker also showed that he is helping launch a new movement in which content careers can become filmmakers. It will be fascinating to see what comes out of this realm.

As great as Curry Barker’s work is here, it’s Inde Navarrette who takes “Obsession” to a whole other level. A star is truly born with Inde’s performance here. If she doesn’t get an Oscar nomination it will be an absolute crime. She gives such an expressive, transformational, and raw performance essentially playing dual roles. Michael Johnston is also worthy of acclaim as the shy and cowardly Bear who makes an awful decision that he has to live with.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.50:1 2160p. How does it look? Far and away the best way to watch the film at home. The moody lighting looks particularly perfect on the 4K disc.

Audio Track: Dolby Atmos. How does it sound? From the quiet character moments to Nikki’s outbursts, this Atmos track hits all the right notes.

Extras include a commentary by Curry Barker, a Blu-ray copy, a Digital copy, and “Obsession Unleashed” (a featurette with cast and crew interviews, story and character discussions, and more).
