Is God Is Blu-ray Review

“Is God Is” is a violent revenge tale.

Based on the play of the same name by Aleshea Harris (who also wrote and directed this feature film adaptation), “Is God Is” is a Southern revenge story with dark comedy sprinkled in. The story revolves around twin sisters Anaia and Racine who were disfigured at a young age due to a fire set by their psychotic father. They believed their mother also died in the fire, but as adults, they receive a letter from their dying mother who tells them the full story about the past. She asks her children to kill their father so she can pass away in peace. Armed with a rock in a sock, Anaia and Racine hit the road to try and find their father. Along the way, they encounter other lovers their father had (including his current wife), their father’s lawyer, and their father’s other children. Will they have their revenge or will the mission become complicated?

With “Is God Is,” the film ushers in a new voice in cinema with Aleshea Harris who makes her directorial debut here. While there are sure to be comparisons to Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” and other revenge soaked stories, “Is God Is” has enough originality to stand out from similar works. What it lacks in story depth, it makes up for in its thematic exploration about family, scars (physical and psychological), justice, and violence. The film also doubles as a road movie about sisterhood that is peppered with metaphors about religion and mythology. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea as the violence may be triggering to some viewers, but for those willing to embark on this  revenge story, you’ll find a film that has more going on under the surface.

Cast wise, there’s a few big names here with Janelle Monάe, Vivica A. Fox, and a terrifying Serling K. Brown, but this is very much Kara Young and Mallori Johnson’s film. Mallori Johnson only has a few credits to her name, but her career is bound to take off here as Anaia. Likewise, Kara Young (a predominantly Broadway actress who has branched into film and TV) is bound to get more roles as the fiery Racine.
