Crime 101 4K UHD Review

“Crime 101” is an overlooked gem.

Based on Don Winslow’s novel of the same name, “Crime 101” is a feature film adaptation by writer/director Bart Layton (best known for the riveting documentary “The Imposter”). The L.A. set crime-thriller is more of an ensemble piece that revolves around the interconnected lives of Mike (a meticulous jewel thief), Sharon (an insurance broker who is constantly ignored in her industry and decides to partner with Mike on a diamond theft job), Lou (an LAPD Detective investigating Mike’s robberies), Ormon (a violent biker/thief), and Maya (a woman who falls for Mike). To say anything more would be spoiling the twists and turns.

The title makes it seem like “Crime 101” is just another crime-thriller containing criminals, cops, and thieves, but this film is anything but generic. Not only does the world of this film feel lived in, but there’s a surprising amount of character work here. Generally, characters merely fill title roles in this genre as a heist, crime, or investigation plays out, but that’s not the case here. The characters have a real level of depth and aren’t cliches. It makes the story more involving and the stakes higher. You feel the danger and the intense action more. It makes the viewing experience more rewarding as you are locked in to see how everything will unravel right down to the very end.

The cast elevates the entire film. Chris Hemsworth has a knack for picking some really bad parts outside of the Marvel universe, but he chose wisely here. His role as Mike is among his finest work to date. Halle Berry is another actor who doesn’t pick the greatest of parts, but she is in fine form here as Sharon. Mark Ruffalo plays another cop again and he does it well. Barry Keoghan could have used a few more scenes, but he is memorable as the crazed Ormon. There are numerous other notable performances here from Jennifer Jason Leigh, Monica Barbaro and Nick Nolte.
