Twinless Blu-ray Review

“Twinless” is one of 2025’s hidden gems.

Written and directed by James Sweeney, “Twinless” is a drama-comedy set in Portland, Oregon. The story centers around a guilt stricken gay man named Dennis who is living a lie. You see, Dennis had a fling with a man named Rocky. Rocky ignored him after their night together and when Dennis went to confront him about it, Rocky was hit by a car and killed. Dennis discovers that Rocky had a twin brother (Roman). Roman (who is straight) is grieving the loss of his brother and attends a support group where he encounters Dennis who pretends he had a twin. Roman and Dennis begin to bond over their losses even though Roman doesn’t know that Dennis is lying about having a twin and that he knew Rocky. Things get even stranger when Roman develops a relationship with a co-worker of Dennis (Marcie) which causes Dennis to grow jealous.

It’s not often you see a challenging and rich indie film that comes out of nowhere, but that’s exactly what happened with “Twinless.” The film garnered critical praise, but went under-the-radar and never got the attention it so richly deserved. Hopefully, it will find the right audience now on home video and streaming because.

As you can see from the synopsis above, there’s a lot going on in this film about love, guilt, secrets, and grief. It juggles a lot of different tones from dark comedy, uncomfortable drama, and tragic drama. Under less capable hands, those elements would not mix well together, but James Sweeney delicately balances the tones. “Twinless” could have easily veered into horror territory, but he manages to create a really emotional, vulnerable, and sorrowful story about human flaws, mistakes, connections, and loss. It’s a surprising movie in which you’re never quite sure where it’s going, which is, again, rare these days.

The cast really sells the material. James Sweeney does triple duties here as director, writer, and actor (Dennis). He’s a real natural at being awkward, creepy, human, and funny all at once. It will be interesting to see what other stories he will tell in the future. Dylan O’Brien is quietly becoming one of the most exciting actors to watch due to his wide variety of roles (see “Send Help” and “Love And Monsters”). This might be his best work to date as he not only plays two polar opposite characters that happen to be twins, but he has to take on some heavy duty dramatic work as well. Aisling Franciosi is charming as Marcie and Lauren Graham has a few notable scenes as Rocky and Roman’s mother Lisa.
