Fallout Season 2 4K UHD Review

Sophomore slump.
Based on the Bethesda post-apocalyptic video game franchise, “Fallout” is a Prime Video series created by Graham Wagner and Genevea Robertson-Dworet. In the 8 episode 2nd season, the weird and darkly comedic sci-fi series leans into adapting the popular “Fallout: New Vegas.” The season digs into plots involving Lucy and Ghoul search for Lucy’s father Hank and The Ghoul searches for his family, various Vaults, RobCo Industries backstory, control chips, Lucy’s brother Norm, a fractured and feuding Legion plots to take New Vegas, a brewing civil war within the Brotherhood of Steel, the Ghoul’s past as a human (Cooper), Vault-Tec executives, a cold fusion device, New California Republic, gangs, and Steph and Betty.
Since the show’s debut, “Fallout” has become a popular series with a dedicated fanbase of gamers and non-gamers alike. The hotly anticipated second season looked to be bigger and more ambitious, but it’s too overstuffed for its own good.
The debut season did a lot of world building and character set-up. One would think season two would start answering questions and digging into the characters more, but we (the audience) essentially get more set-up, more mysteries, more characters, and more jumps between the past and the present (with the flashbacks really dragging down the pacing). Season 2 places far too much emphasis on fan service and world building and less on fluid storytelling. Sure, it’s cool to see Deathclaws and the New Vegas setting, but there’s too many storylines being crammed into a mere 8 episodes. If this was a longer season, there would be more room to develop everything. As is, it’s a clunky mess of a show that makes you wish you were playing the video games instead.
Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of “Fallout” is that the show never quite grabs you despite the obvious talent on board with Ella Purnell, Kyle MacLachlan, and Walton Goggins (who continues to carry the entire show as The Ghoul). The second season even brings in more talented actors with Kumail Nanjiani, Justin Theroux, and yes, even Macaulay Culkin as Lacerta (a member of the Legion). Maybe season 3 will better serve the cast?
