Dust Bunny 4K UHD Review

Bryan Fuller makes his directorial film debut with “Dust Bunny.”

Written and directed by Bryan Fuller, “Dust Bunny” is an R-rated fantasy action-horror film. The story revolves around an 8 year old girl named Aurora. She claims to have a monster under her bed, and while that sounds like an age old cliche, this happens to be true. The monster (a sort of giant bunny hybrid with sharp teeth) has eaten her parents and foster parents and now Aurora needs help getting rid of the monster for good. She approaches a neighbor in her apartment building (merely known as Resident 5B) to kill the monster. She knows is a hit man after following him one time. The hit man’s handler Laverne suggests taking Aurora out given that she is a witness, but he refuses. As if the bunny wasn’t a big enough problem, Aurora and Resident 5B soon have their hands ful when Laverne sends hit men to take out Aurora, an assassin is assigned to take out Resident 5B, and a nosey FBI agent (Brenda) is lurking around.

After working in the world of television and creating series such as “Pushing Daisies” and “Wonderfalls,” Bryan Fuller makes his jump into the film world with “Dust Bunny.” The fantasy film is a strange amalgam of an action film such as “Leon: The Professional” and a family film in the vein of “IF.” Even with its family film vibes, the movie is a straight up violent R-rated monster movie in which the vicious bunny monster wreaks havoc on anyone who touches the floor around Aurora. Films about monsters under the bed, imagination coming to life or getting lost in imagination to deal with trauma are nothing new in the film world, but Bryan Fuller puts his own unique stamp on it here. The tone may not always work (who exactly is the target audience here anyway?), but Fuller’s imaginative concepts and dark humor make it stand out from the normal theatrical fare.

Fuller aside, Mads Mikkelsen is the real reason the film works as well as it does. His Resident 5B hit man character truly elevates the film as a whole and it’s great to see Mikkelsen reteam with Bryan Fuller after their acclaimed work together in the “Hannibal” TV series. Sophie Sloan (who plays Aurora) does a fine job leading the film here. She has particularly great chemistry with Mikkelsen. Sigourney Weaver is memorable as Laverne (the villain of the film). David Dastmalchian is seemingly in everything these days and he always makes every film better for being in it.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 3.00:1 2160p. How does it look? In typical Fuller fashion, the set design, framing, and colors really pop here (especially in 4K).

Audio Track: Dolby Atmos. How does it sound? The Atmos track is nothing short of effective (especially during monster attack scenes).
